Backend and APIs

Everything your app does behind the screen, from saving orders to checking who can see what and talking to payment and partner systems, built so it does not slow down or break as you grow.

Most products I join already have a working idea and a tired API. Endpoints grew one ticket at a time. Auth is inconsistent. A report that should be a query is a loop in PHP. I take that apart without a rewrite for its own sake.

The work is Laravel or Node.js, depending on what you already run. I keep the public contract stable, then fix the model, the indexes, and the places where a request does three jobs it should hand to a queue.

You get something another engineer can open in six months. Named routes, validation at the edge, and permissions that match the roles in the product, not a single is_admin flag.

What this includes

  • •APIs (the connection points your app and partners call) with versioning, input checks, and logins that match how the product is really used.
  • •MySQL or PostgreSQL database design, indexes, and query work aimed at pages that load in under 100ms.
  • •Redis caching, sessions, and rate limits, so the database is not the only thing standing between you and a traffic spike.
  • •Background jobs for email, imports, and anything slow, so customers are not left waiting on a spinner.
  • •Safe retries for payments and webhooks (automatic notifications between systems), so a double click never charges twice.

What you leave with

  • •A documented set of endpoints the front end can rely on.
  • •Slow reports replaced with indexed queries or a cached read model.
  • •Background work that survives a deploy instead of dying with the web process.

How it starts

We start from the workflows, not a blank schema. I map the entities, the permissions, and the slow paths, then ship a vertical slice you can call from the interface.

When to use it

Use this when the screens exist (or are next) and you need a backend that holds up on a busy Monday.

Ways to work together

01

Join your team

A senior engineer inside your team. I work in your codebase, standups and code reviews, and stay long enough to own a real part of the product. Under the hood: Laravel, Node.js, Python or AWS.

Full-time or long contract
02

Work solely for your company

A dedicated engineer for one company. I take the product from planning to the live version: backend, data, hosting and screens, with your product as my focus.

Dedicated contract
03

One project

A clearly defined build, then a clean handover: an MVP, taking an AI-built prototype (Lovable, Bolt, Cursor) to production, a migration, or an AI feature. Get in touch to discuss scope and pricing.
