Real-time systems

Events that have to move while someone is watching: an order status, a courier location, a reading from a device. Under the hood: WebSockets, queues and AWS Kinesis.

I have built Kinesis pipelines for low-latency telemetry and Node.js workers that take that stream off the web tier. The page stays responsive because it is not also the processor.

For product features, that is often WebSockets or a short poll against a read model that a worker keeps current. Food ordering, rentals, health admin. The user should see the new state without reloading.

Real-time is easy to demo and hard to operate. I include the dead-letter path and what happens when a consumer falls behind.

What this includes

  • •Kinesis or a queue between the event and the work that reacts to it.
  • •Node.js or Laravel workers that can restart without losing the stream.
  • •A read model the UI can poll or subscribe to.
  • •Backpressure and retries so a bad message does not stop the line.

What you leave with

  • •Status the user can see without refreshing.
  • •A web tier that is not also the stream processor.
  • •A failure mode you can see, not a silent dropped event.

How it starts

We name the event and who needs to see it. I put a pipeline under that, then the smallest UI change that proves it.

When to use it

Use this when your current "real-time" feature is a refresh button.

Ways to work together

01

Join your team

A senior engineer inside your team. I work in your codebase, standups and code reviews, and stay long enough to own a real part of the product. Under the hood: Laravel, Node.js, Python or AWS.

Full-time or long contract
02

Work solely for your company

A dedicated engineer for one company. I take the product from planning to the live version: backend, data, hosting and screens, with your product as my focus.

Dedicated contract
03

One project

A clearly defined build, then a clean handover: an MVP, taking an AI-built prototype (Lovable, Bolt, Cursor) to production, a migration, or an AI feature. Get in touch to discuss scope and pricing.
